What: Workshop featuring world-renowned speaker Ty Sells, addressing Marijuana Myths & Connecting with Your Teen. Plus q&a panel discussion with local experts.

When: November 14 from 6-8 pm (dinner served at 5:30 pm)

Where: Burlington High School library

Need we say more?: Free delicious dinner (momos, chow mein, samosas, vegan-friendly options) AND $30 gift certificate for the first 30 attendees (1 per household). 

Join us for an evening with world-renowned speaker Ty Sells. Ty will engage us in a thoughtful, inclusive workshop that focuses on making a positive connection with our teens. 
As a long time youth substance use prevention advocate, Ty will also help us address the risks of increasing marijuana use among Burlington students. We'll examine strategies to engage our kids in a fact-filled conversation to assist them in making their own healthier decisions.

Open House

Hello Team Phoenix Families,

The year is up and running and we have lots to share with you. We hope to see you all at Open House on Tuesday 9/25. Come early for the PTO sponsored Community Dinner!

• 5:30 - 6:30 - Dinner in cafeteria
• 6:30 - 8:30 - Open House – various locations – everyone will start in the auditorium and then visit classrooms to meet teachers. More details will be provided - and information from each team will be handed out that evening to parents/guardians.

Informal Open House

Welcome back, Phoenix Families!

• Please help spread the word about an exciting and time-sensitive opportunity for 5th and 6th grade girls. Unexpectedly, Burlington Youth Lacrosse (https://www.btvlax.com/) has 5 openings left on its 5/6 girls team. If you have girls who join right away, it will be free of charge and they will receive a free lacrosse stick and other all the other equipment they will need. Interested kids/parents should email me directly ASAP: lauriebrown6@gmail.com This is for beginner and experienced players; we stress fun, being a great teammate, and learning the game. Practices are Monday and Wednesday, 5:30-7 pm at Leddy Park with games on Sundays from now until June 10th.

Parent / Guardian volunteers needed at the 5th Grade Parent Orientation night on May 24th! Greet incoming families, answer questions, help with email sign-up. Time: TBD

6th & 7th Grade Parents / Guardians - volunteers needed to help with the 8th grade Promotion Ceremony prep and reception! (This allows 8th grade families to enjoy the activities.)

Front Garden Clean up - beautiful front garden landscaping at Hunt needs spring spruce up! Volunteers needed for 30 minute/1 hour or any time you can give!

We'd like to pass along some important announcements and reminders:

• Today (4/6) is Peggy Weaver's last day at HMS. Be sure to pass along your appreciate and well wishes to this fixture of the Hunt community.
• Today is also the last day of the third quarter. You should expect to see your child's report card next Friday 4/13.
• Many students on Team Phoenix have been busily working on the HMS production of The Lion King. Check out a performance either Friday or Saturday night at 7:00pm!
• Your child should have brought home a letter this week discussing the upcoming SBAC testing. Please take a look and let us know if you have any questions. Thank you for supporting your child with this.

1 - Sharing this free workshop being coordinated by ParentIn taking place Feb.17th at Fletcher Free Library - 11am - 1pm. Registration / RSVP information below. Child Care is available.

ParentIN is hosting a free educational event for parents in Burlington, featuring a presentation about trends and risks associated with today's marijuana, including a panel of local experts for audience Q&A. All Hunt Middle School parents & guardians are invited to join!

As of July 1, it will be legal for adults 21 and over in Vermont to possess up to an ounce of marijuana, and grow marijuana in their homes. With increased access to marijuana comes increased challenges for keeping kids safe. It is more important than ever for parents to be informed.

Have dinner at Chipotle on Tuesday, Feb. 20th from 4:00 - 8:00pm to raise funds for the Hunt Middle School 8th grade class trip!

3 - The Burlington School District’s priorities are to work on “reducing the disparities and closing the achievement gap, while raising the Bar.” But just what exactly does that mean? What is the achievement gap anyway?

Burlington School District’s “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion” Board Committee is hosting a community workshop, “Achievement Gap 101,” to help answer that question. Join district staff, educators, and school board members on February 20th from 6:00 – 7:30 for this free workshop designed to help community members gain a foundational understanding of the achievement gap and the district’s strategies for closing it. Come learn more and connect with others in your community who are interested in helping all of our community’s children succeed!

Space for this event is limited to 50 participants and will be on a first come, first served basis. If you’re interested, please RSVP via email to Mary Hewitt by February 12. mhewitt@bsdvt.org

RSVP’s will receive an email confirming attendance and additional event details, including location.

4 - A film making opportunity for Hunt students

5 - Burlington City Arts on Pine Street does neat programs. Check out their classes.

DRAWING & PAINTING
Students will work with pencil, pastels, pen and ink, watercolor, acrylic and more to explore the elements of drawing and painting in new and exciting ways! Students will be encouraged to create 2-D artwork of what they observe as well as what they imagine.

WHEEL THROWING
Students never get bored throwing on the wheel! Students will learn how to use the pottery wheel and handbuilding techniques to create cups and bowls. Glazing and firing techniques will be demonstrated to show the finishing steps of the ceramic process. All glazed items are dishwasher safe and lead free.Limit: 12

PRINTMAKING
Learn all about printmaking! At BCA’s professional print studio, students will learn different techniques such as carving stamps on Styrofoam or linoleum and monoprinting. Students will create a variety of one-of-a-kind prints they will be excited to show off. Limit: 8

SILKSCREEN T-SHRIT DESIGN
Students will learn how to design and print their own unique t-shirts using fabric inks and silkscreens. T-shirts will be decorated with students’ hand-drawn images or digital images they create using Photoshop on the studio computer. Limit: 6

DARKROOM PHOTOGRAPHY
Using our manual 35mm cameras, students will go on group photo shoots and will learn how to make black and white negatives and prints in our traditional analog darkroom. Limit: 6

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

After learning basic photography principles, students will go on photo shoots and learn how to make color prints in our digital media lab.Limit: 6

Dinner and Child Care provided!

All Hunt and Edmunds 8th grade students and families are invited to 8^th Grade Information Night at Burlington High School! Attend this introductory event at BHS to learn about the math and science sequences. Administrators and faculty will be on hand to provide information about clubs, events, schedules and classes offered at the high school.  At the event, dinner is served and child care is provided. The school is located at 52 Institute Road, Burlington, VT 05408.

Here is the schedule, Wed, 1/24 at BHS:

Here is a message from a Youth Team that includes some Hunt students who are marching in the event:

 On behalf of the upcoming March For Our Future rally, we are reaching out for your involvement and presence. On Saturday, January 20th, at 1:00, we will march from Montpelier City Hall to the Statehouse for a rally. Here is a link to our facebook event and one to the website.

    Although it’s been a tough past year politically, to say the least, this march is not a political one. It is simply -- yet complexly -- a march that will highlight human rights, dignity, and equality for all. The wide array of issues that are faced today (climate disruption, racism, corruption, net neutrality) affect youth in a completely different way due to our lack of representation in polls and in general.

    Therefore, the goal of this youth-centered event is to elevate our voices and allow a platform for us to be heard. It’s obvious to us that youth are not just our future but who we should be looking to now.

    Your attendance would offer great support to not only the rally, but to all the youth of Vermont. There are multiple ways to be involved including turning people out, helping with promotion, poster-making, and sponsoring the event. We are offering tabling opportunities outside of the statehouse to event sponsors. Tabling fees will be determined based on the annual budget of the group/organization. iPads are Back!

Hi folks,

Your child will be getting back his/her/their iPad this afternoon with instructions to charge it overnight. That is not a different expectation than every other night of the school year, but we imagine students will be excited to get their iPads back and may need a reminder to log off and plug it in at some point this evening. We will be checking during Mod 2 tomorrow to ensure they are charged. Those that are not will be marked on the iPad infraction rubric, per procedure. Thank you so much for your support.
